Love in the Little Moments: Building Bonds Through Adoption

Friday 25 September 2026

Love at first sight. That instant connection. The moment you meet your child and somehow, everything just clicks into place.

And for some adoptive families, it really can feel like that.

But for others? Love takes time.

And we think it’s important to say that out loud.

There is no ‘right’ way to feel

Welcoming a child into your family through adoption can bring so many emotions. Excitement, joy and pride can sit alongside nerves, uncertainty and, sometimes, a feeling that you weren’t expecting:

“Why don’t I feel that instant connection?”

If that happens, it doesn’t mean there is something wrong with you. It doesn’t mean you’ve made the wrong decision. And it certainly doesn’t mean that you won’t become an incredibly close, loving family.

Relationships take time to build.

Think about many of the most important relationships in your life. They probably didn’t all become deep, trusting relationships overnight. You got to know one another. You shared experiences. You learned what made each other laugh, what helped when things were difficult and how to be there for one another.

Adoption can be like that too.

Love can grow in the everyday moments

Sometimes love doesn’t arrive as one huge, overwhelming feeling.

Sometimes it grows quietly.

It’s making their favourite breakfast because you know it helps start the day well.

It’s reading the same bedtime story for what feels like the hundredth time.

It’s noticing they reach for your hand when they’re unsure.

It’s learning which silly voice makes them laugh.

It’s a difficult day followed by a better one.

It's looking back six months later and realising just how far you've come together.

These small, ordinary moments can be the foundations on which trust, attachment and love are built.

So please don't put pressure on yourself to feel a certain way by a certain point. There is no deadline for love.

Bonding works both ways

It’s also important to remember that your child is getting to know you too.

For a child who has experienced change, loss or uncertainty, learning that a new adult is safe, dependable and going to be there can take time.

You are learning each other.

What helps them feel safe? How do they show you they're overwhelmed? What makes them feel connected? What do they need from you when things don't go to plan?

Little by little, you're creating your own family rhythm.

And some days will feel easier than others. That's okay too.

You don't have to figure it all out by yourself

At Adoption Tees Valley, our support doesn't end when a child comes home.

We're here as your family grows and develops, including through those moments when things don't feel quite how you imagined they would.

Our Nurturing Attachments programme can help parents better understand their child's emotional needs and think about ways to strengthen connection and relationships.

We also run lots of Tier 1 groups and activities, giving adoptive families opportunities to spend time together and, importantly, to spend time with other adopters who understand some of the unique experiences that come with adoption.

Sometimes simply talking to someone who can say, “We felt like that too,” can make a huge difference.

And because we know your wider support network matters too, we offer Family and Friends training to help the people closest to you understand adoption and how they can support both you and your child.

Give yourselves permission to take your time

There can be a lot of expectations around becoming a family, but every family’s experience is different.

For some, bonding happens quickly. For others, it happens gradually. Neither experience makes one family more loving or successful than another.

Be kind to yourself, give each other time and allow your relationship to grow.

Because sometimes love isn’t one big moment.

Sometimes it’s hundreds of tiny moments, quietly adding up to something extraordinary.

And we’re here to support you through them all.
